How does OSDP protocol help strengthen system security?
OSDP is vital for secure access control because it resolves security and functionality issues in older protocols, ensuring encrypted and protected data transmission between readers and hosts.
If the system uses secure, encrypted readers but Wiegand channel, the data sent by the reader to the system is unencrypted. The OSDP data transmission protocol enables data to be encrypted both between card and reader, as well as between reader and system.
OSDP secures data between the reader and controller using AES-128 encryption (Secure Channel).
What are other OSDP benefits?
Cost savings with File Transfer
OSDP can speed updates to configurations and firmware with File Transfer. OSDP protocol allows you to push updates down to all your readers.
Personalized Transactions
Need personalized user notifications? Time & Attendance? User account transactions? OSDP bidirectional flow keeps user’s data safe.
Simpler installation
OSDP protocol uses only a two-wire RS-485 connection for data (in addition to power). OSDP also supports longer cable runs, which saves costs.
OSDP is an open standard protocol
Although OSDP’s roots trace back to the early 2000s, it was the U.S. Security Industry Association that formally adopted and established it in 2011. More importantly, SIA established it as an open standard, letting everyone benefit from it without proprietary vendor locks. They foresaw the solution to Wiegand’s vulnerability would also need to be a future-proofed one.
Then, in 2020, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) established OSDP as an international standard. The latest version, OSDPv2 was strengthened that year with encryption. The noise interference of OSDP’s bidirectional data flows had already been defeating phishing. The constant switching of OSDPv2 ciphers now makes it effectively impossible.
